"By now all of you know that the year 2000 and the computing challenges that it presented were non-events. Your lights stayed on and your monthly statements were issued without incident. This did not happen by itself. GVEA had a team of dedicated employees working behind the scenes to be as prepared as possible for any possible contingencies. On the eve of the New Year, we had additional people on hand and standing by to monitor all systems and respond to emergencies. Thanks to all of their hard work, the Y2K bug was exterminated."
Our mission-critical systems used to produce and deliver electricity were Y2K-ready. For over two years GVEA's Y2K project leaders, Brad Evans and Jeff Yauney, worked on resolving potential Y2K problems. They identified and inventoried eight areas that are critical to the generation and distribution of power in the Interior:
|
1. Fairbanks area generation plants 2. Transmission & distribution facilities 3. Healy generation plant 4. SCADA operations & security 5. GVEA communications 6. Corporate Computing 7. Pipeline operations 8. Building facilities & fire protection |

Recognizing no company/organization can make absolute guarantees about something as complex as Y2K, we also had contingency plans in place. GVEA made a smooth transition into 2000.
