Sustainable Natural Alternative Power

"When visiting family in California, I've been impressed with uses of alternative energy there. I'm glad GVEA has a green power program that makes it easy to support alternative energy locally"

Clean, renewable, low-cost power for the people of Interior Alaska: That's been an objective of GVEA and the Green Power Advisory Committee for the past several years. Now, improvements in technology and growing public support are bringing new opportunities. We're adding alternative energy sources to our mix of power sources through the SNAP program.

GVEA's SNAP program links local people who want to produce renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, with local members who want to buy renewable power. For as little as $2.00 each month, you can help support this important new resource. SNAP producers and purchasers participate on a strictly voluntary basis. SNAP producers are paid out of funds donated by those who choose to participate as purchasers. SNAP won't have an impact on the rates of members who do not wish to participate.

Purchasers

There are now nearly 550 members contributing more than $34,524 annually to the SNAP program. For as little as $2 per month, you can join them. Your contribution will help provide incentive for others to produce green power.

Producers

GVEA now has 20 SNAP producers. You can join the ranks of green power producers in Interior Alaska.

Producers can earn up to $1.50 per kilowatt-hour produced. Each year around Earth Day, contributions from purchasers are divided among producers based on each producers' output. One-hundred percent of purchasers' contributions go to producers.

Green Goals

In 2005, GVEA adopted a Green Power Pledge. This pledge calls for 10 percent of the co-op's peak power to come from renewable sources by 2007 and 20 percent by 2014. SNAP is one step toward meeting those goals.
