John Burns will assume the position of President and CEO of Golden Valley Electric Association on May 1, 2020.

Following the retirement of Cory Borgeson in early March 2020, GVEA’s Board of Directors asked John Burns to take the helm as Interim President and CEO while initiating the recruitment process for a successor to lead GVEA into the future.

Alaska Executive Search assisted with the recruitment process. GVEA’s Board of Directors received 60 applications from candidates throughout Alaska and across the country. Following this extensive recruitment process, the board selected Interim President and CEO John Burns to fill the position.

Burns is a lifelong Alaskan, a graduate of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and a former UAF Nanook hockey player. Prior to his promotion to GVEA’s President and CEO, Burns held the position of Vice President and General Counsel. In addition to nearly 30 years as a Fairbanks attorney, Burns served as Alaska’s Attorney General in Governor Parnell’s Administration, Chair of the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation and in various capacities with local community organizations.

“I am honored to be selected as GVEA’s President and CEO,” said Burns. “As a longtime Fairbanks resident, I understand and appreciate GVEA’s importance to the economic, environmental and social viability of the communities we serve. It’s a privilege to be leading an incredible group of employees; individuals who are community-minded, dedicated to performing their jobs well, and focused on ensuring GVEA lives up to its mission, which is to safely provide our member-owners with reliable electricity, quality customer service and innovative energy solutions at fair and reasonable prices.”

Burns further commented that, “The electric industry of today will not be the electric industry of tomorrow. GVEA must be innovative and receptive to new ideas and opportunities as we herald in a new future. In so doing, however, we must also be unwavering in our commitment to provide safe, reliable electric power at economical prices.”

“GVEA’s Board of Directors welcomes John Burns as President and CEO,” said Board Chairman Tom DeLong. “We are confident that John will ensure GVEA continues to live up to the needs of its members.”
