Good¢ents Grants Awarded in February 2023

Breast Cancer Detection Center (BCDC) received $15,000 in Good¢ents funding to go towards the purchase of a new mammography unit.

The Good¢ents Board of Trustees met on February 21, 2023 and awarded nine grants totaling $45,105.

All grants from the Good¢ents Foundation are awarded to nonprofit organizations within GVEA’s service area. Applications are reviewed quarterly in February, May, August and November by a volunteer board of trustees.

The next application deadline is April 30, 2023. Applications and more information about the program can be found online on our Good¢ents page. Good¢ents is funded by the generous members of Golden Valley Electric Association. Since the program began in 2011, GVEA members have funded grants totaling $1,535,294.77.

Here’s a summary of the recent grants:

Access Alaska: $1,500 toward an accessible community garden designed to meet the needs of seniors and others with a variety of disabilities, including wheelchair users, individuals with low vision or blindness, and those who simply need to be seated while gardening. Access Alaska works to encourage and promote the total integration of people who experience a disability and elder Alaskans to live independently.

American Cancer Society: $4,000 toward free programs and services for cancer patients in the Fairbanks area to help them overcome barriers to receiving treatment with practical, emotional and logistical support.. The American Cancer Society of Alaska offers multiple programs, providing services such as transportation, advocacy, lodging and more at no charge to cancer patients and their families.

Breast Cancer Detection Center: $15,000 toward the purchase of a new mobile mammography unit. Their mission is to increase awareness of the survivability of breast cancer and the benefits of early detection by delivering screening services and educational programs throughout the state of Alaska.

Delta Skating Association: $5,000 toward asphalt paint for the Liewer-Olmstead Arena ice rink. Their mission is to provide the Delta Greely residents some wholesome winter fun, a safe place for recreational skating, a healthy nurturing environment with certified coaches for the youth who wish to learn the game of hockey, further the skills and ability of both hockey and figure skaters, increase participation in our programs and continue to improve what has been established.

Fairbanks Children’s Museum: $2,000 toward their rotating children’s exhibit in the middle of the museum. The Fairbanks Children’s Museum is an invaluable resource for children, parents and caregivers in Fairbanks and we are proud to support their mission to connect and inspire through discovery and the power of play.

North Star Community Foundation (NSCF): $1,500 toward the upgrade of the Chena Tool Library inventory, which provides access to tools and empowers residents to improve their homes and community spaces. NSCF improves the quality of life for Fairbanks North Star Borough and interior region through philanthropy, community development and public service.

North Star Council on Aging: $5,605 to purchase an ice machine to serve the needs of Meals on Wheels, Senior Congregate Dining Services and other programs provided for senior citizens at the Fairbanks Senior Center. The North Star Council on Aging meets the needs of older adults living in Interior Alaska by providing services that maintain, enhance, and promote quality of life, self-determination, independent living and dignity.

Snedden Family Foundation: $4,000 toward making the Snedden Memorial Park early childhood playground wheelchair accessible. The Snedden Family Foundation carries on the legacy of Helen Snedden, who devoted decades to providing community parks to uplift the people of the Fairbanks community.

Tri Valley Volunteer Fire Department: $6,500 for a new rescue snow machine. The Tri Valley Volunteer Fire Department provides quick, efficient, reliable care to the residents of Healy and the thousands of tourists and seasonal workers that visit the area throughout the year.
