Good¢ents Grants Awarded in May 2023

Together we make a big difference!

The Good¢ents Board of Trustees met May 16, 2023, and awarded seven grants totaling $49,916.49. All grants from the Good¢ents Foundation are awarded to nonprofit organizations within Golden Valley Electric Association’s service area. Applications are reviewed quarterly in February, May, August and November by the volunteer board. Applications and more information about the program can be found online on our Good¢ents page. The next application deadline is July 31, 2023.

Good¢ents was funded by the generous members of Golden Valley Electric Association. Since the program began in 2011, GVEA members have funded grants totaling $1,585,211.26.

Here’s a summary of the recent grants:

Boys & Girls Club of Fairbanks: $7,000 to upgrade and replace technology equipment in their Club Tech Lab. This lab promotes positive academic outcomes by supporting youth programs that include homework help, tutoring and focused work on literacy, reading and math. The Boys & Girls Club of Alaska has a mission to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Fairbanks Library Foundation: $7,000 for technology for the Children and Teens area of the Noel Wein Library, which is currently undergoing an expansion and renovation. The Fairbanks Library Foundation was established as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 2006. The purpose of the foundation is to support all Fairbanks North Star Borough libraries; enhance their operations; encourage and support expansion of library buildings; facilities and equipment; and create, manage and build an investment fund to assist in these endeavors.

Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre: $5,666.49 for the construction of a new, safe and sturdy 30-by-30-foot stage platform. This was a feature at Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre’s UAF location for many years, but after extensive use, it had to be taken down due to safety concerns. The mission of Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre is to perform, engage and provide educational programs for the Fairbanks community and its surrounding villages.

Georgeson Botanical Garden Friends: $4,000 toward the purchase of battery- powered mowers to replace their fleet of push lawn mowers. The UAF Georgeson Botanical Garden was founded in 1989 to promote research, education and outreach in high-latitude horticulture.

Midnight Sun Council, Boy Scouts of America: $12,000 toward the purchase of a 15-passenger van to transport youth and adult members arriving to Fairbanks from outlying villages to attend camp and other programs. The Boy Scouts of America’s objective is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices during their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Scouting teaches young people to come together to find peaceful solutions, work to become the best versions of themselves and create a better world.

North Pole Football Booster Club: $2,250 to buy new football helmets and replace helmets that need to be retired for safety reasons. The North Pole Football Booster Club was established as 501(c)(3) in 2015 and exists to promote a high degree of voluntary community and parental participation, support, sponsorship and interest in the North Pole Football Program.

Partners for Progress in Delta: $12,000 to buy a new boiler for the Delta Career Advancement Center, a faculty that houses Delta’s Construction Trades Program and has recently been designated as an emergency shelter for the Delta community. Partners for Progress in Delta Inc., a consortium of educational partners, has worked together since 2003 to address a shortage of skilled workers in the region.

Thank you to all of the members who voluntarily round up their monthly billing statement to the next dollar. The cents you contribute are greatly appreciated and makes a difference within the communities GVEA serves.

Thank you to our 2023 Good¢ents Volunteer Board of Trustees: Mike Cook, Chris Bunch, Bernard Gatewood, Katherine Hennigan, Bobbie Ortiz and Heather Lambert.
