The Good¢ents Board of Trustees met on November 21, 2023, and awarded seven grants totaling $38,639.
All grants from the Good¢ents Foundation are awarded to nonprofit organizations within GVEA’s service territory. Applications are reviewed quarterly in February, May, August and November by a volunteer board of trustees.
The next application deadline is January 31, 2024. Applications and more information about the program can be found online at www.gvea.com/goodcents. Good¢ents is funded by the generous members of Golden Valley Electric Association. Since the program began in 2011, GVEA members have funded grants totaling $1,637,290.44.
Here’s a summary of the recent grants:
• Interior Alaska Medical Clinic: $12,450 for the purchase and installation of a chair lift in the clinic’s stairwell to improve accessibility in compliance with ADA rules. The clinic is expanding. The upper level where the pharmacy is moving currently lacks accessibility, posing challenges for both patients and staff.
• Neighbor to Neighbor: $849 to buy a new freezer that will address storage shortages at their community assistance center. Increased donations have strained freezer space, affecting food preservation.
• Rural Deltana Volunteer Fire Department: $10,000 to upgrade ventilation systems by replacing two fans with battery-operated ones. This initiative streamlines maintenance, standardizes equipment across primary response vehicles and supports the installation of inverters to reduce reliance on generators in the engines.
• Southeast Regional Resource Center: $3,000 to support Academic Decathlon students residing within GVEA’s service area with supplies, travel expenses or scholarship funds. Interior students consistently achieve high placements at the United States Academic Decathlon National Competition.
• Special Olympics Alaska: $5,000 to support local Special Olympics teams with training and competition and to offset registration fees for state competitions, ensuring accessibility to life experiences through sports training and competition.
• University of Alaska Museum of the North: $7,340 for the purchase of RAID media storage, completing a second field camera kit and updating virtual reality production hardware for virtual exhibit development.
